The ambassadors
Lambert Strether undertakes a seemingly straightfoward ambassadorial task on behalf of his wealthy fiancee and benefactress Mrs. Newsome : to go to Europe and exhort her long-absent son Chad to return home to Woollett, Massachisetts, where he is neede in the damily business. It is a mission of salvation, for Chad appears to have fallen prey to a "Wicked Women". Stether's own fortunes are inextricably bound up with a succesful outcomes, yet he, like Chad, soon falls under the spell both of parisian life and the mystery woman-charming, cultured madame de Vionnet. He finds Chad much changed-donfident and refined-and any remaining enthusiasm for his mission quickly wanes. Mrs. Newsome responds by dispatching a second wave of emissaries led by her daughter, who is steelier in her resolve.
In the Ambassadors, which James considered his finest work, he revisits his key theme; the culture clash between the old and new worlds, the contrasting manners of people born and raised on opposite sides of the atlantic ocean.
